Tor XV Match Reports

Tor 35 - 15 Imperial - Sat 10th December 2011

Tor took the field without their captain and a couple of players in unfamiliar positions. From the off there was an abundance of passion and desire within the team to correct missed opportunities in previous weeks. From the off Tor were keen to get on top and their energetic start soon resulted in a try by Man of the Match Aaron Marshfield.

This great start was quickly followed by a silly penalty that Imperial kicked. Tor quickly got back on top with a scintillating try by left winger Alex Hall who was in blistering form. After this dynamic start Tor soon settled into the dominant side. The back Row of Monty Powell, Dan Beal and Tom Payne were dominant in open play.

Brothers Jamie and Tom Payne were taking all their own lineout ball, skilfully directed by Andy Wright at Hooker, and supported by props Matt Sturgess and Dumiso Ncube they spoiled most of the opposition's.

Full back Matt Hyde took a penalty before half time. Tor Captain Toby Payne and fly half Alfie Lee were distributing most of the possession well. Lee was kicking from hand accurately. There were a few timing and handling errors in the backs due to a the unfamiliar positions some players were playing.

So much ball was being produced from the forwards dominance that there was plenty to experiment with. Alex Payne and Ozzie Austwick were terrifying the opposition with straight powerful running which was causing the Imperial defence loads of problems and creating overlaps for Tor. One such gave Alex Payne a try early in the second half.

A second try by winger Hall and an opening created by Hamish Malone gave a try to Matt Hyde which he converted to give the team a strong lead of 35-3. With 20 minutes to go, rather than capitalise on their dominance replacements were brought on to rest some Key players.

Although well up to the challenge these changes and the big lead meant Tor relaxed towards the end allowing Imperial back into the game for 2 late tries, one converted.

Tor travel away to Minehead next weekend and build on this powerful performance with a full 80 minutes of effort to secure a win.
