Back To Grass Roots at Tor

Following a period of 5 seasons with 5 different coaches Tor Rugby Club have had an opportunity to reflect on a more sustainable future on the pitch to ensure more stability, continuity and the right environment for both senior and young players to progress and enjoy the club and their rugby.

Following the departure of last season’s popular coach John Hunt it would have been easy to appoint a knee-jerk replacement as incoming President Malcolm Dykes says; “The next Head Coach at Tor will be an appointment for the long term who is focused on both the senior and junior sections. We are not rushing into anything and would rather create the right environment from within the club to allow whoever comes in to have the best chance of success. For now responsibility has been handed well and truly back to the senior players at the club, of who we have full confidence in until recruitment is complete”.

Much of this responsibility will rest on the shoulders of Tor’s new 1st Team Captain Andy Webb who has been active on the club’s management committee for a number of years as well as making an impact of late in the side in his preferred position of Loose Head Prop. Webb says, “There is something quite charming about starting from scratch, this is a players club and we have a unique opportunity until a new coach comes in to really shape the future of what we do, how we play and the attitude in which we approach this. We have set ourselves many objectives over the seasons but quite simply we have all agreed that for now we need to focus on our spirit and togetherness, have fun and respect the fantastic talent we have around the club. If all of our senior players can commit to the cause then anything is possible we have a great bunch of lads here”.

Tor’s first test will come in the form of a friendly against touring side Crawley RFC on Saturday 20th August at Lowerside Park, a great atmosphere is expected.
